Learning Objectives:
Section 1:
1. Demonstrate improved working knowledge of current CDA guidelines with respect to achieving glycemic control, cholesterol lowering and vascular protection in patients with diabetes.
2. Apply a clinically relevant (practical) approach to diagnosis and work-up of a patient with diabetes suspected of having coronary artery disease.
3. Enhanced understanding of expected outcomes in patients with diabetes when targets for blood pressure, LDL and glycemic control are achieved.
4. Implement ability to assess clinical benefits associated with achievement of glycemic control.
5. Enhanced knowledge of the risks and benefits of insulin therapy and be comfortable with transitioning their patients from oral to insulin therapy.
   
Section 2:
1. Enhanced understanding of risk stratification and evidence-based approach in managing patients with elevated blood pressure.
2. Implement strategies for managing patients with complex cardiovascular disease and risk factors.
3. Demonstrate improved ability to understand the pathophysiology of RAAS system activation and clinical benefits of its inhibition at various levels.
4. Enhanced understanding of the changes and implications of the new Canadian guidelines for lipid lowering.
5. Develop an evidence-based approach to using multiple drug classes in the management of high-risk cardiovascular patients and apply this approach to their clinical practice.

Program:
By participating in this program, participants will be able to:
1. Understand and interpret results from recently published and presented clinical trials in cardiovascular and metabolic areas.
2. Differentiate the mechanism of action in the management of all agents available in the cardio-endocrine therapeutic continuum.
3. Implement strategies for managing high-risk patients with complex cardiovascular disease and risk factors according to guidelines.
4. Clearly differentiate between therapies for the treatment of high-risk patients with and without a prior diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.
5. Demonstrate improved ability to summarize the results of pre-clinical and clinical studies on therapies for acute coronary syndromes and stable CAD, as well as metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
